Odd Temporal Breakpoints: Earth 4-K

.

The timelines of all universes have many possible breakpoints, but some have important breakpoints in the oddest, often most mundane situations. This is one of them.

If Doctor Peter Denton, of York, does not get the brakes repaired on his car on August 2, 1977, he will rear end a lorry on the A64 near Tadcaster. It will be a minor fender bender, but it will delay the lorry’s arrival in Leeds by 25 minutes.

That means that 10 year old David McGill will not get to see the smooth efficiency of a lorry unloading, then picking up a new trailer. Instead, he will see the very pissed off dispatcher and ware house manager chewing out the driver just before the driver decks them both.

Soured on the idea of becoming a trucker, David will instead become interested in being a police officer. That interest will morph into becoming an intelligence agent, which he will eventually do.

Years later, while working in Russia, Peter will hear about some rebels plans to detonate a bomb that will kill certain high level politicians and gangsters during a secret meeting. He will make contact with the rebels and give them certain information that causes then to wait an hour to detonate the bomb.

When the bomb is detonated, it takes out everyone it was supposed to, plus 2 British and 1 American traitor, all three of whom arrived late after a meeting with agents of their government. The bomb kills a total of 154 people and pretty much levels the palatial home the secret meeting was held in.

Over the next 6 months, while the Russian government is in chaos, British and American assets are installed in key positions. Within 5 years, Russia is a fully functioning democracy and pretty much under Anglo/US control.

David gets a commendation and a much nicer assignment in Rio de Janeiro.

Odd Temporal Breakpoints: Earth 200-B

.

The timelines of all universes have many possible breakpoints, but some have important breakpoints in the oddest, often most mundane situations. This is one of them.

Earth 200-B is a post-apocalypse world. A man made virus has killed 95% of the population over 16 years old. Large tribes of children and teens live in primitive conditions as nomadic scavengers.

Twenty years after the Big Die Off, a young girl named Gala, born and raised in the Green Lantern tribe, will wander away from the group of girls she was gathering berries with. She will wander to the edge of a small cliff along a river.

If 13 year old Gala bends over to pick a small red flower, she will fall off the cliff, into the fast moving water and be swept a mile downstream before she can ever yell for help. By the time she has climbed on a log and caught her breath, she will be two miles away and at the fastest section of the river. She won’t hit the broader, slower part of the river until she is 12 miles from her starting point.

Afraid and getting hungry, Gala will finally get on shore near the ruins of an old bridge. Fortunately, she will find an old house along a small road to take shelter in for the night. The house has a vegetable garden gone wild, so she has fruits and veggies to eat.

The next morning, she starts to head east, toward her tribe, but sees lions in the distance. Turning west, she starts down the road. By mid-day, she comes to an old building called “Riverside Bait & Tackle”. There she finds a small boat. Knowing that she is safer on the river, she sets out in the boat. She can only hope to find another tribe soon.

After 5 days, the river empties into a large bay, along whose shores are the ruins of many great cities. Hungry and tired, Gala rows toward one. When she goes ashore, she sees several children, a few people her age and 4 incredibly old people. They must be at least 40.

These people survived the virus and have been teaching children about science, survival and the world. Eventually, Gala will lead several young people out to teach others. She will help start many tribes on the road to forming permanent villages and practicing agriculture. She will be one of the revivers of civilization.
