Lost Movies of Earth 2-B: Gold Rush Gertie (1939)
Between 1936 and 1945, Warner Sisters made 8 movies in the “Gertie” series. Each movie starred Betty Zoles as Gertrude “Gertie” Wilson, a good natured, but clumsy, woman. Known for her great slapstick timing and wisecracking comments, Zoles was a big star.
The films featured Gertie in different historical time periods, getting herself and others into and out of trouble. In this one, Gertie is in California during the Gold Rush and manages to save a family from ruin.
This film was lost in the Great Los Angeles Earthquake of 1970, which eventually drove most of the movie studios out of the area and over to Bakersfield.
