…man, even for me that was bad
Ok, so here is my big announcement, followed by a bunch of other stuff behind the cut.
I’m going to put up a website that will have a big bunch of RPG related stuff on it. Characters, settings, gadgets, creatures, cultures, adventure seeds, adventure frameworks, series ideas and musings based on 33 years as a (mostly GMing) roleplayer. Some of what I put up will be free and some of what I put up will require payment. Right now, I’d guess that it’ll be a 50/50 split. You’ll also be able to just plain donate funds to keep things going and new stuff coming. LJ Friends, please note that some of what will be on the website will be stuff I’ve done here over the years…but it will be expanded, polished and better.
But that’s not all. I’ve got a bunch of fiction bits on my computer and I’ll be posting short stories. I also have a bunch of scripts for a webcomic, which I may do either on my own (no small feat since I have a -10 when it comes to the graphic arts) or with the aid of a cartoonist (if you are a cartoonist, let me know if yer interested).
I’ll probably also include some humor pieces and the odd rant.
And anything else even remotely gaming related.
So that’s it. Once things are up and running, I’ll let y’all know so you can visit the site and decide if it’s worth a buck or two.
Now, if you want to read WHY I’m doing all this, go behind the cut.
Reason #1: Money. Hey, at least I’m being honest. Due to many factors, Grace and I are in a totally shitty financial state. We are just barely keeping our heads above the rapidly rising waters. My job blows, but the unemployment rate here in California pretty much means I’m stuck with it for the next year or two. Every penny we can bring in will help.
Reason #2: I like writing, but I hate writing. If you aren’t a writer, you may not understand that. See, I enjoy short form writing, but writing long books (like the TOON books) soon turns into chore. It’s like birthing a baby without female genitalia. This probably has a lot to do with me being a natural oral storteller. Long stories just…take too long.
Also, I’m not the world’s biggest fan of rewriting, tho I know it is a necessary evil.
Then there’s my rampant imagination. Folks, I really DO get 6 great gaming ideas before I’m done eating breakfast. And story ideas. And movie ideas. And…well, whatever. The mind, she never really shuts off. This is great, but it also means that while I’m writing up a long piece of gaming stuff, other gaming ideas are seductively attempting to get my attention. For examples, see all the unfinished stuff on this LJ over the years.
Finally, I’m lazy and easily distracted. Maybe I was a cat in a past life
But Doc, you say, however will you manage to get all of this stuff up on a website, given all of the above?
The answer is: in small bites. Instead of putting up 10 characters all at once, I’ll put up 3 or 4 every few days. Instead of laying out an entire setting, I’ll do it in small chunks over the course of months. I’ll write short stories that are connected (and can possibly be filled out into a longer form later).
You get the idea. And remember: a whole bunch of this stuff is already pretty much done. In some cases, it’s been done/near done for near 20 years.
Reason #3: More Money. See, I’m thinking that once a piece is done, I can clean it up, put a red dress on it and then sell it in a final, longer form containing extra stuff. A Director’s Cut, if you will. Or a Remastering, for you music lovers. And yes, Sean Patrick Fannon, I’d be in touch with you on the whole selling it thing:) Of course, those loyal folks who donated throughout the whole creative process would get the final hotness for free. With sprinkles.
Reason #4: This will all give me something to do, thereby keeping me out of trouble. Stop laughing!
There you have it, my friends. I hope you’ll give the site a look when it opens up. Right now, I’d put that date at least 2 months down the road.
Oh, and I’ll be putting up a poll to see just what y’all might mostly be interested in seeing on the site.
I’m outta here for now.
Neat! I look forward to seeing it!

If you have not already, you may also want to consider one of the gradual funding models used by other RPG authors, such as Greg Stolze’s Ransom model or Wolfgang Bauer’s Open Design model.
I have indeed looked at them and I do think I’ll be using both methods once I get things up and established.
I’ll also be using the Adventure Design By Poll method for some of the free stuff on the site.
