Animal Sidekicks That Are NOT Dogs Or Cats: Sniffy

Species: California Grizzly Bear

Human Partner: Agent D

Special Powers: Largest bear on earth

Background/Personality: Born in 1963 near the town of Grass Valley, in the Bear Flag Empire of California, Sniffy was rescued as a newborn cub after his mother died. His rescuer, a California Ranger, brought the cub home where he and his family raised it and gave it the name Sniffy. Years later, when the Ranger’s son became an Agent of the Empire, he often brought the 2,200 pound bear with him on missions that did not occur in cities or towns.

Despite being 50% larger than the largest polar bear, Sniffy was usually an extremely gentle soul who loved playing with children. When needed though, he could be a terrifying engine of destruction.

Sniffy served as a Special Agent for 15 years, retiring at the age of 26. When he died at the age of 40, under orders of Empress Poppy I, he was buried with full honors in a secret location. Some decades later, Agent D was buried next to him in a similar manner.

Species: Raven

Human Partner: Julian AKA “The Kid”

Special Powers: A large extended family

Background/Personality: In post apocalypse Paris, The Kid and his raven, Poivre (Pepper) are a mystery that is feared by some, loved by others and a little spooky to everyone. They seem to pop up out of nowhere, help somebody good or stop somebody bad, then escape, often thanks to a large flock of maybe 40 ravens.

Those ravens are the siblings, mates, children, etc, of Poivre, whom The Kid raised from a hatchling and trained. Poivre deeply cares for The Kid and the two are able to communicate surprisingly well via movement, sounds and, since ravens can be taught to speak, actual words.

A very smart bird from a very smart species, Poivre is a gentle bird, although he does have a sense of humor and enjoys playing little pranks on The Kid and his own flock.
