Critter Con 14
Con Day Zero: We arrive, meet old friends, have a moment of weirdness, and get ready to party.
Hi, everyone! Cupcake & Tucker here, doing the con reports to free up Grandpa so he can get in more gaming and whatever.
We drove into the Critter City dome at 11 this morning. It was good not to see memorial statues to family members this year.
After checking in at our hotel, we headed over to the convention center to meet up with old friends and get our badges and swag. That was also the meet up point for our friends who flew or drove here. That was a pretty big crowd, including Aunties Avis, Ginie, Holly, Cathy, and several others. There was also Uncles Peter, Gabriel, Mark, etc, etc. The NHT contingent was almost as big as the human one. There were plenty of hugs, nose boops, belly rubs, etc.
We grabbed our badges and swag and headed to Taco The Town for lunch and swag review. Said swag was, as always, plentiful and cool.
The con book was laid out like a small town newspaper, with the games lists in the classified section. Pretty fun to read, actually.
The biggest swag was a really nice CritterCon 14 satin jacket with a holographic depiction of the con logo.
Also in the bag were…
A new board game called Pixies VS Giants
A D&D 5E adventure, “The Long Road Home”
A set of Three Stooges miniatures, already painted
A set of three D6s
Drink coupons for local pubs
Discount food coupons
A bunch of $1.00 off coupons for the dealer’s room.
A single, uniquely colored sock, that must be worn to and visible at the Big Friday Dance. Further details will be revealed at the dance. This is intriguing.
After eating out delicious tacos (beef for Tuck, watermelon for Cakes), we walked back to our hotel accompanied by half the Aunties & Uncles. On the way, we came upon Mink’s Cold Drinks, now operated by the grandchildren of Mac & Sally Mink, AKA Uncle Max & Auntie Daisy. It was very weird to see the place now, knowing how Max & Daisy had been the Minks for over 80 years. Still are the Minks, actually, although grandson Kyle told Grandpa that they have been home and in declining health for 3 weeks. As we walked away, Grandpa noted that Mac & Sally were certainly in the last few weeks of their lives. It’s an example of the strange relationship our family has with death that nobody was really upset to hear that.
As always, the hours before dinner were spent talking and scheduling our games and such using the very user friendly con app. I, Cupcake, am scheduled for 6 RPGs, 4 board games, a LARP, and 5 seminars. I, Tucker am scheduled for 7 RPGs, 4 board games, a LARP, and 6 seminars.
We may also go on this year’s Gaming Pub Crawl, which features playing a different piece of the same game (your choice: Fantasy, Sci Fi, Horror, or Pulp Heroics) over the course of 10 pubs. Might be fun.
But now, we are all getting ready for the pre-con Cheesecake & Bourbon Party. We will have more reportage tomorrow.
