“How did it go?,” he asked the tired looking man.
“It went smelly, hot and hard working. I feel like I’ve been beaten up. On the other hand, I’m a tenbuck richer and my belly is full of your mother’s excellent food, so I’m doing well. And how goes it with you?”
Dree picked up the canvas laundry sack and thought about that question for a second.
“I guess things are going alright, so far. I have a big problem to figure out, but I’ll know more tomorrow.”
The Offy did not laugh at him, like most adults would. Instead, he nodded and said that it was good to think problems out if you had the time.
“Of course, “ he went on, “if you don’t have the time, then you have to think really fast. Sometimes, you don’t even get time to think, you just do the best thing at the moment and then think about it later. ‘Course, if it works out well, you might not need to think about it. And speaking of thinking, I think I’d like you to run a couple of errands for me tomorrow, if you could, ummm”
“Dree, “ the boy offered. “Sure thing, Mr….”
“Bevan,” the Offy told him as he offered his hand. “Pleased to meet you, Dree, and there’s no need for a Mister, Bevan will do fine. What I’d like you to do is buy a few things for me. It looks like I’ll have a long day in the chicken shit mines and won’t be able to shop for myself.”
