Chapter Ten: Crystal Vibrations

Somewhere in the world, a large piece of Ancient crystal the size of a boulder began to vibrate. No humans saw or heard this, because this particular piece of crystal was very far from anywhere that humans normally went. It was in a rough, rocky place that was incredibly cold and a good 1,000 miles from the nearest humans, at this moment. Sometimes humans came a bit closer, but not often.

This cold had no effect upon the crystal and it continued to vibrate. In many locations far away, other pieces of crystal vibrated. They told the large crystal about where they were, how they were functioning and, most importantly, if they had had any contact with a human. Of all the dozens of crystals, only one had known human contact, but not for long enough to initiate Contact.

This did not bother the crystals, because being bothered was unknown to them. What it did do was to cause all of them to vibrate faster and faster, so as to release them from hiding. Soil, sand, leaves, snow, whatever covered them was now cast aside, so that they might be seen by humans. It was time for Contact and Reassembly. The only crystal that wasn’t vibrating that fast was the one that had made the brief contact with a human. It vibrated just enough to communicate with the others, but not enough to disturb the rocks it was hidden under.

Sooner or later, the humans would come.
