Soon, they came to the creek and did just as he had said. Looking back east, they saw torches cresting a hill. They began trotting up the sandy bottomed creek, thankful that the moon was just a crescent.
After going a mile or so, Bevan stopped them. They were well hidden by the trees that lined the creek. Handing his reins to Ala, he dismounted and started up the hill on the east side.

Ala tied the reins of Bevan’s horse to her own, then climbed down. Turning to Dree, she whispered, “Turn your head, Dree. I need to pee.” The boy nearly turned all the way around in the saddle.
After a minute, she told him it was ok to turn back around. She got back in the saddle just as Bevan reappeared.
