KublaCon Fall Review
There’s a new fall gaming convention in the Bay Area, and it’s a KublaCon! I was there from Friday noon until 3:00 on Sunday. I ran three sold out Toon games and did one seminar. Here is my quick review of the con. I’ll not talk about the hotel, which was just fine, because next year the con will be in the usual hotel that KublaCon Prime is in, up by the San Francisco airport.
Ease of going through pre-reg: Very good, fast and easy. The staff knows what they are doing.
Attendance: There were a lot of people there for a first year con. That’s a good sign
RPGs: Most RPGs were two to a room, which sometimes made for a bit too much noise, but was otherwise okay. There were not as many RPGs as everyone would have liked, but that is kind of a trend at NorCal cons in recent years.
Minis Gaming: There was a big room with plenty going on.
Boardgaming: Tons of games and plenty of space!
Larps: I only saw a couple in progress, but they were full of people.
Cardgaming: I saw plenty of card games being played.
Dealer’s Area: This was a rather small part of the very large Grand Ballroom where Open Gaming, Boardgaming, and the Game Library were held. Still, there was a pretty good selection of stuff to buy.
Seminars: Mine had two people, and the lady after me had about that. Seminar attendance has been dwindling for years everywhere.
Overall Impression: The KublaCon folks have been putting on a great con for a couple of decades now, so this new version is off to a good start. I think it will only be better next year in the original hotel. If you get a chance to go to either version, do so. You’ll have fun.
