CritterCon 2025 (#18)
Con Day Three Saturday
In which, with a few exceptions, Our Merry Crew plays games and does normal con stuff, watches even more video game carnage, LARPs, and attend a swanky charity event.
Today was “By Golly, Let’s Play Some Games!” day for those of us who have had other things on our plate the last two days, including kid wrangling. Our younger folks were off at Children’s Game Day with Jeeves, Mrs. Hudson, and several human & NHT volunteers. This being an 8 hour affair, we took advantage of it to just be congoers…with the following exceptions.
Some of us did attend seminars and workshops. The “2024 in NHT Game Design” seminar was packed and really informative. The “Gaming Disasters” seminar was hilarious.
Games that were played ran the gamut from card games to games of skill to video games to board games. None of our group played any minis or wargames, but there were plenty to be seen.
The Semi-Finals of the RQWC were intense and a real nail biter in the last 10 minutes. As it was, with 2 team members left on the Mumbai Girls and 1 on the Girls With Cats teams managed to grab the two Teeth of Gorgo and win the spots in the finals tomorrow. Congratulations, ladies.
Several of us played in a 2 hour LARP titled “Death At CritterCon”, in which two of us were murderers, three were detectives, and the other twelve were everything from restaurant staff to GMs. And potential victims, because aside from the two victims we started the game with, three more got whacked along the way. One of those was Murderer #1, a poisoner played by my wife, Grace. The other Murderer, a stabby sort of killer, was caught in the act at the 1 hour 45 minute mark. Turns out he was, Rudy, a t-shirt seller, played by Whoopie, a pit/lab mix. It was a fun game.
Dinner was a grab bag of food from 6 different places delivered to our suites. Amazingly, we were joined at dinner by Yoyo, Duke, and their partners, Grindy & Sunny. Normally our hard working boys and their crews are asleep about an hour after the Dealer’s room closes, but tonight was different, because they have to be at the “CritterCon 18 Swanky Charity Balll.”
This is a brand new event, held to support several human charities, because the NHT civilization doesn’t need charities. True, some of these human charities do benefit animals, but most benefit children and those who need help in other ways.
Now, the swanky part of things comes from the fact that formal dress is required, but it does not have to be formal dress from our current time or eeven our real world. Which is why Spike & Mary were wearing formal Roman togas, Gabe was dressed in 1920s high rolling gangster garb, and Grace & I were wearing formal wizard’s robes.
We all had donated actual cash to the collection box, but some of us were also up for auction. Those of us who GM auctioned off custom made game sessions at next years con. Duke offered to create a Reality Quests setting based upon the highest bidder’s idea. Yoyo had both an appearance in a comic book issue and a weekend of skate/snow boarding. Cupcake & Buck had a free preview stay at the next Sanctuary to open. Many other folks offered many other things to bid on.
It being a ball, there was music, dancing, finger foods, and much conversation. I’m pretty sure a splendid time was had by all.
And we raised 4.5 million dollars for 20 different charities.
Now, time for bed. Final con day reportage tomorrow.
