Pulp Era Villains: Madame Mayhem
Appearing in no less than 16 times in 5 pulp magazines over a period of 11 years, Madame Mayhem was the favorite villain in reader polls. Saboteur, spy, murderer, blackmailer…she wore many hats. And even in the end, neither readers nor pulp heroes knew the truth about her. Was she German, raised in Canada? A poor girl from Texas? A rogue British agent? An alien? All of these were put forth in various stories, but none were ever proven.
Madame Mayhem had many different accents, skin tones, hair colors, and general looks over the years, but it was pretty well understood that she was about 5’5” and had an athletic build. She also, in many stories, had access to a vast criminal organization.
Madame Mayhem appeared in 6 issues of Doc Tempest Magazine, 4 issues of The Dark Detective, 2 issues of Sam Drake, G-Man, 2 issues of Lady In Black, and 2 issues of Doctor Demon.
