CritterCon #19

Con Day Four

(Note: Various commentary by those other than me is in italics.)

In which we play games, do seminars, perform Old Time Radio, and go on an epic Pub Crawl.

The High Points

Hi folks! Yoyo here getting things started because Dad is both busy with seminars and nursing “a hangover that would drop the Incredible Hulk in his tracks.” It seems that his age is messing with his ability to metabolize the more common sobriety meds. Mara is working on something for him. Anyway, until the old boy has time to write, here’s today’s report, late as it is.

Game Report

Since our booth squads are doing such a great job, Duke, myself, and our teams are able to do lots of ordinary gamer stuff. We played games all day. I got into a session of Robots VS Aliens that had 10 players on each side and was fast paced and violent. My team, the Aliens, barely won.

Later, I joined a game of Beer Run with Omar and Duke. I won by taking the risk of sending my big shipment of beer down the river. A lucky die roll got me through the rapids and I won by 20 points.

I met up with Auntie Avy, Auntie Holly, Grindy, and Mom, who had just played in a game of Kill Doctor Lucky. They were on their way to lunch at Ed’s Big Weenie.

Lots more games were played, and we all had hella fun. And now I’m off to autograph comic books and skateboards.

Seminars

Doc here. Okay, I’m feeling better thanks to an injection of something Mara whipped up.

I did 3 back to back seminars today. They were…

Building A Village: Always fun. This year, our village was on an island in the middle of a big river.

Yes, Tell Us About Your Character…In Three Minutes: A very popular seminar, which is why it runs 90 minutes. Mics are cut off right at 3 minutes, because many gamers just go on and on.

I Hate/I Love…: The second most popular seminar, after “Ask The GMs ANYTHING!” I’ll be part of that one tomorrow, but today, 250 gamers and 6 panelists vented their spleens about what in gaming we hated and loved. Mostly hated.

After 4 hours of seminars, I joined Spike for the excellent, but quickly consumed, chow over at Something Fishy, a great fish & chips place.

And then it was time for radio stuff.

Our Saturday Radio Shows

From 1 to 2, Peter Hildreth and I hosted “Spy Tunes”, where we played music from spy movies and tv shows. It was great fun. Then from 2-3, we were part of the cast of “The Adventures Of Doc Mystery”, which stars our buddy Brian as a Shadowesque Canadian crimefighter/detective.

Now, in the past, these episodes have been very pulp hero/detective stuff. Lots of action and a serious tone. But this year, Brian’s script was a much more humorous thing titled “I Love A Misadventure.” Doc Mystery was serious, but everyone else was some form of goofy stock character who mostly got in the way of solving the mystery I played Old Joe, the handyman at the Bear Arms Hotel. The whole thing was lots of fun.

Then, we all played in an episode of “Very Amateur Theater Presents” titled “Big Trouble In Buzzard Gulch”, written by our friends Peanut, Aki, and Red. It was a classic “slamming door” fast paced comedy set in the Old West at the Frisky Filly Saloon & Casino. There were characters in love, arguing, hiding from the law or their angry spouses, lawmen looking for fugitives, and the hotel/saloon/brothel owner looking for somebody to pay the damned bill. It was hilarious and we were all worn out by the time it was over.

The Pub Crawl

After a bit of rest, we all headed to Curry On Eating! for dinner. Excellent food and drink and conversation. And then we all went to our rooms to get ready for the Gaming Pub Crawl.

This year’s Pub Crawl rules were that you couldn’t play the same type of game twice in a row. The game categories were: boardgames, RPGs, dice games, trivia games, card games, miniatures, LARPS, and video games. Since the point is to hit as many pubs as you can, most games are short in nature. You also need teams of 4, so we all rolled dice and my team was Me, Buck, Ginie, and Hermione. The 30 pubs were…

The Wistful Maiden

The Pen & Paper

The Tumbling Dice Tavern

Beer, Y’all!

The Three Dragons

Fat Lou’s Place

The Pub At The End Of Time

Starpub 7

The Cobalt Club

Nick’s On Broadway

Lovecraft’s Tea Room

The Happy Gnome

The Silver Dollar Saloon

Treetop Inn

The Black Pearl

Daffy & Donald’s Tavern

11 Forward

The Rathole

Jurassic Pub

Mad Mac’s

Uncle Satan’s Lounge

Moses & Jeff’s Texas Brewpub

The Natural 20

Goofy & Porky’s Club

Eddie’s Place

Wooster’s

The Palace Garden

Rum & Trouble

Big Al’s Social Club

RoboDisco

We played 2 RPGs, 3 dice games, 3 boardgames, 1 trivia game, 2 card games, 1 minis game, and a LARP. Most of us drank very sparingly of alcohol. It was huge fun, but my team didn’t even place in the top 100.

And now, my friends, it is time for snoozing and resting up for the last day of the con.

But first…

Quest Worlds World Cup News

Today’s scenario was one of the most deadly that Duke and company have ever come up with. I suggested the title back in January, but holy shit, did they ever run with it.
