Skills I Picked Up: Cooking Fish
(Yet another tip of the old bandana to Spike Jones for suggesting this theme.)
Thank you. I’m glad you liked it. Salmon is kind of my speciality, but really, I can cook just about any sort of fish. Hence “Lita’s House of Fish.”
Well, you see, my family has been fishing, selling fish, and cooking fish since 16 year old great great grandpa Gino got to San Francisco in 1890. He worked a fishing boat, then bought one when his two brothers arrived from Italy. Great grandpa opened Vitale’s Fish Market, which my cousin Greg still runs.
But I really learned to cook fish from my mothers. Mom Dee was the seafood buyer for the Cioppino Shack up the street and Mom Mags was working on a fishing boat and they fell in love. They had 5 of us, and we ate lots of fish because it was plentiful and cheap. And they taught us all to cook, because Italian on one side and Poruguese on the other. It’s in the blood.
I was the best cook of the bunch. Nick and Vera are pretty good, babs is okay, and Frank should never even set foot in a kitchen. I bought this place 4 years ago. My husband runs the business end and I run the kitchen. Anyway, I’m glad you liked the salmon. Come back on Thursday, because I’m doing a salmon mousse I think you’d like.
