Hot Spots: Herak’s Tower

.

Oh yeah, old Herak’s Tower! That was a miserable job, that was. 200 feet tall, high rising stairs and hotter that demon piss. Fuckin’ fire lovin’ creatures everywhere. Ask Mina there about the flame flies. Hahaha! Took near on a year for her hair to grow back out proper. And me, I got hit solid on my left are by a fuckin’ devil snake. Damned things spit molten sulphur! Wooz healed me as quick as he could, but by the gods, it hurt. Still, we got all the way to the top, killed Herak and got a good haul of loot on top of what Fetandel paid us to kill him. But you can bet your balls that none of us ever went after a pyromancer again!

Hot Spots: Yarvoon

.

As you get ready to leave training and start your lives as adventurers, your various other instructors have no doubt shared some of their wisdom with you in a final short speech. Well, as an old swordsman for hire, let me give you some very practical advice: Five Reasons Never To Go To Yarvoon.

1: It is the home city of the Genasi, a race descended from Efreets. This means that the can be quick to anger and ready to fight. They are VERY good fighters.

2: The entire city is HOT. All surfaces, and I mean ALL, are at least 90 degrees. The skin of the Genasi runs more like 105.

3: Everything else is hot, too. All food, drinks, etc are both hot by temperature and hot by spices. Even the water comes out of the well at 80+ degrees.

4: Being in the middle of the desert, it is also very dry, thus causing you to drink a lot of that warm water.

5: If you don’t succumb to heat stroke, you’ll find that the famed Genasi treasures are well guarded and the penalty for attempted theft, or pretty much any crime, is immediate death by burning.

CritterCon 13, Con Day Zero: In which we arrive at Critter City and once again have a bittersweet monment.

As most of you know, over the months from November 20th, 2018, to November 2nd, 2019, we lost Silky, Daisy and Luke. We also lost Max and Misty. In 2018 & 2019, the CritterCon folks put up various memorials to first Silky, then Daisy & Max. These memorials were the first thing you would see as you drove into the dome.

So we knew that we'd see something similar for Luke & Misty, and we've had many months to prepare for it. What we couldn't prepare for was the scope that the NHT community honored them.

I'll let Sasha explain.

(Sasha: No NHT has ever been honored like Silky was. She was, quite literally, the Mother of Us All. She created sapient non-humans on this planet. If we had religion, she would be our Goddess.

But, like you humans, we also revere our artists, and that includes actors. Long before he came to live with us, my brother Luke was a very popular comic & dramatic actor on the NHT stage, screen and television. If he had done nothing but the 90 episodes of “Lucky Luke”, his fame would have been secured. Think Lucille Ball or Dick Van Dyke or any of your legendary comedy tv stars. But he also did other tv shows, movies, radio and stage shows. He packed a lot into his first 8 years of life, then thanks to temporal folding, packed in even more once he joined our family. He was beloved by hundreds of millions of NHT.

Over in the UK and Europe, Misty was doing much the same, starring in her own series “My Humans” and a series of 4 French comedies about “Detective Zoey”, as well as many theater roles. In
le Ministère Français des Affaires NHT
, the entire lobby is decorated with her story.

So of course they would be honored big time. But yeah, even I was a bit surprised by how big.
)
The statues of Luke & Misty were very lifelike and covered in all sorts of little memorial offerings by people. Just beyond that was a big screen running clips from their careers and announcing that episodes of their series and some of their movies would be running 24/7 throughout the con. In all the NHT only businesses and hotel rooms, there were pictures and stuffed Lucky Luke and Detective Zoey dolls. Finally, there was the bombshell that Luke and Misty had not only left money to pay all our hotel bills (with a note saying “You didn't think I'd let that rabbit outdo me, did you?”), but had paid the way for 100 young NHT actors/artists/writers/game designers to attend the con.

And then we found out that a bunch of Luke & Misty fans had organized a sort of con within a con for NHT only. That's why you won't see as much reportage from the critters this year.
After some tears and smiles, we got on with doing our Con Thing.

The critters all split to go do their thing and we all got in line to pick up our badges and swag bags. As usual, lots of lines meant short fast lines, so within 20 minutes, we were all heading to Mink's Cold Drinks for some liquid refreshment.

Once there, we learned that Mac & Doris Mink, who are both 82 years old, are handing off the business to their son & daughter in law after the con. In truth, they had given over the running of most of the biz 10 years ago, but they still ran the stand at CritterCon every year. They have 10 stands around the country and service a lot of cons and other events. They plan on doing some traveling, then settling down at home.

On the way back to the hotel (the Hilton), we ordered pizza from Pizza My Heart for delivery while we check out the swag and con book.

The swag included TWO t-shirts, a bunch of business cards, a card game called “Babysittin'”, a trio of short D&D 5e adventures, a couple of plastic miniatures, a boardgame called “Christmas Lights War” and tickets for discounts on food, drinks and games. Oh, and a cool CritterCon 13 commemorative glow in the dark D20. Not a bad haul.

Our pizzas arrived and we checked out the con book while stuffing our faces. This year, in keeping with the theme of the “Surf Summer Halloween”, the whole thing looks like an old EC horror comic had sex with a Beach Party movie and birthed a con book. It is mildly gross and very funny.

As always, I'm running three games: Toon, Toon and a pulp era game using D&D 5e rules. I'm also on the panel for “The Year Without Cons”, “Ask The GMs Anything”, “We Loves It/We Hates It” and “13 Years Of CritterCon”.
Of course, we'll also be doing our annual gigs at the radio station, including a couple of Old Time Radio Shows.
Right now, everyone is taking a siesta before dinner. After dinner is the Cheesecake & Bourbon party, because Texans love to throw parties and bust out the bourbon.

More bloggage tomorrow.
