Chapter Seven: Blue Tree
As they rode towards Blue Tree, Ala and Bevan told each other about themselves and their travels. For Ala’s part, this mainly consisted of the thrilling story of how her family business slowly and endlessly circled the Outer Loop Road of Omha while sending their dozens of wagons out to towns as far as 300 miles away. She was not sure if Bevan was really as interested as he seemed or just being polite. What she was sure of was that having another human riding along next to her beat the crap out of riding along with only horses to talk to.
Bevan tried to make his side of the conversation as interesting as possible, which wasn’t so easy when your first 18 years had been all about following a big herd of cattle up into the high valleys in the spring, then down onto the flatland in the fall. He managed to get in some mildly exciting tales of Nomad gatherings and wild animal encounters, which Ala seemed to find fascinating. She was even more interested in hearing about his travels after he left his family.
