“I hope you don’t mind, Miss. Not too many places to sit tonight.” She smiled at him and gave a nod. She looked kind of worried and maybe just a little tipsy.

“I don’t mind, “ she said slowly. “You kind of remind me of my own little brother, although I guess he isn’t so little at 15. Go ahead and eat. I’ve just been thinking about…stuff.”

She took another drink of ale and Dree began eating a garlic sausage and some mashed turnips. His mother was a great cook.

After a few more bites were down, he asked the lady, “Are you trying to figure out a problem, Miss?”

She snorted and looked at him. “Yeah, I am. A problem with my family, or maybe with me, or maybe both. I’m not sure. Trying to figure out what I want to do with my life.”

Dree allowed as how that seemed to be a common problem with people who weren’t old and set in their ways. He told her that his Greaty always said that young people should travel, or maybe travel to places beyond where they usually did.
