Chapter Twelve: Older & Wiser
Great-grandmother Helma was almost done with her book. She had been writing it for several days now, with a marathon writing session yesterday. She was still very tired from that, but she had to finish it today. Her time in this life was running out fast and she wanted to pass on as much information as she could. In a few minutes, the book would be done, ready for the next Storyteller in the family.
When she was done writing, she laid the book down and thought about all she had done in her long life. Some things made her sad, some things made her shake her head at her youthful stupidity, but most of her memories were very good. She had told some of them in the guise of stories about other people, but there were some stories that she would never tell. These were stories nobody would ever believe were true, or in a few cases, stories that were nobody else s damned business. Truth be, some of those latter were her favorites.
Helma looked out the window at the Town. Nearly noon and it was full of activity, including a traveling show being put on by a Roadie family. Across the street, she saw Erno Smitlik, now 80 years old and moving slowly into the barber shop he used to own. She had babysat him when he was a toddler.
