She read that passage four times and was still staring at it when she heard the Grand High Curator behind her say, “Come to the end, have you?”
Seyan screeched and jumped up out of her chair like it had turned into a cactus. She was very glad she had peed just a bit earlier. She turned and looked at the Grand High Curator like she was a trapped rat with no way to escape. When she could finally speak, the only thing that came out was, “What the hell?”
The Grand High Curator did not laugh at her, but he did smile and put his hand on her shoulder.
“Don’t worry, Seyan, I wouldn’t dream of putting this job on you. Besides, I still have a bit of energy left in me. Now let’s take another walk before dinner.”
Feeling way more relief than disappointment, Seyan followed him out of the room and down another of the twisting tunnels.
