Chapter Twenty Six: Cold Camp

After riding for several hours, Bevan, Ala & Dree had stopped in a small wooded area to rest the horses and get some sleep. Bevan was certain that they had given their pursuers the slip, but he knew that soon there would be Seekers from all over converging on Blue Tree and then spreading out to hunt for them.

“We’ll sleep until dawn, the head out.” he told the others. “Cold camp tonight.”

Dree, who was exhausted, was into his bedroll and fast asleep in minutes. Ala laid out her bedroll next to him. Bevan put his on the other side of Dree, but only sat on it.

“Going to keep watch?” Ala yawned as she snuggled down.

“For a little while. Force of habit.” he replied, but she was asleep before he finished saying it. Bevan looked out south through the trees. With the openess of the land and the fact that they were on top of a small rise, he could see for a good 20 miles. There was no trace of any light to be seen. He felt good knowing that. He would just about bet that the Curators had gone back to Blue Tree to get some rest before resuming their search after the sun rose.

For a few minutes, he chanted a lucky chant that his people often used. He didn’t know if it would bring them good luck, but it made him feel better. When he was done, he got up and checked the horses before getting into his own bedroll and falling asleep.
