The Alphabet: O Is For…One Day Left

This is widely regarded as one of the saddest, most depressing, and yet best written novels of the 21st century on Earth 18-K. It has sold tens of millions of copies and a movie was made from it.

The premise of the 75,000 word novel is that Bea, whose name is not revealed until the very last word, has taken a drug that will end her life in exactly 24 hours. She has done this because she is almost certainly the last human alive on Earth, everyone else having died either from a terrible pandemic or from various other diseases that their now heavily compromised immune systems could not fight.

She writes about what she does during this last day, as well as memories of her 30 years of life. It is all done in the form of hourly diary entries. The writing is powerful, yet realistic.

The movie, which is just as slow paced and emotionally grabbing as the book, won 7 Oscars and many other awards.
