A California Kid & Spider Story: The Hot Job
This is the story of an art heist that takes place during a Fourth of July party, and what each person in the team was doing.
The California Kid
The man that Chief Richards knew as Mr. Hanson, that Lucy Jervison and her family knew as Tom’s cousin Brett, and the host of this party knew as Ed Franklin, was just finishing up a conversation with a couple of wealthy businessmen, the Junior Senator from Texas, and their spouses.
“Yes, when those new fuel efficient engines hit the market, sales of traditional engines and the cars using them will plummet.” He said that with the confidence of somebody who really had seen the engines in action. Sadly, he had not. Such engines were at least 3 or 4 years off.
The older of the three men nodded. “But what will that do to the oil industry?” Being based in Texas he was naturally worried about his petroleum heavy portfolio.
“Well sir, here in the USA, it will take a hit. But in the rest of the world, where the oil dry up is already worse, and these engines won’t be going anytime soon, it will boom. I’d say a big boom, lasting at least 5 years.”
The three men nodded, no doubt thinking it would be a good idea to pick up a few more shares of petro stock.
“But now, gentlemen, you’ll have to excuse me. It’s almost time for the festivities and I need to use the facility. Ladies, a pleasure to meet you.” He was all of 4 steps away when his radio vibrated several times. Taking it out of his pocket, he made a fast right turn into an open service door that lead to the kitchen. Stepping into an alcove near the refrigerators, he moved a small switch on the radio and said, “Speak to me.”
Queen Bee replied, “Everyone’s ready for the fireworks. You’re live.”
The California Kid smiled and took a deep breath, as he always did at the start of each job. Then he spoke into the radio so the whole crew could hear him.
“It’s showtime.”
