A California Kid & Spider Story: The Hot Job
This is the story of an art heist that takes place during a Fourth of July party, and what each person in the team was doing
Smooth Paul
The moment Paul heard Kid give the signal through his earphone, which he said he was wearing to listen to a baseball game, he took Lucy’s hand and gently squeezed it three times. She gave a slight nod, then turned to her father and step-mother.
“Daddy, is it okay with you if Tom and I watch from the third floor balcony?”
He father looked at them and said, “Only if you stay in full view.”
Paul put on a shocked look and said, “Why, of course, Senator.”
Jervison chuckled and replied, “Kissing is okay, Tom.”
Paul and Lucy both faked looking sheepish before walking off toward the house while holding hands.
The moment they stepped through the front door, their entire demeanor changed. Paul reached into his shirt and produced an envelope. Handing it to Lucy, he said, “I’ll meet you in 5 minutes.” Then she started up the stairs while he ducked into the pantry just off the kitchen.
Moon, who was on a 30 minute break, was waiting for him. He was now dressed in a skintight black outfit that covered every inch of his body. He had a backpack, also black, on his back.
Paul grinned. “Good to see you again, Spiderman.”
Moon laughed. “Just doing whatever a spider can. Your package is in the second floor shower.”
“Excellent. How are the guards?”
“One drink away from many regrets. I made sure they got them when they rotated 10 minutes ago.” He then began walking toward the little used dumbwaiter that would take him to the second floor, thereby avoiding the guards at both stairways on the first floor.
Paul watched him walk away, then said, “Be careful, Moon.”
Moon nodded. “You too, Smooth.”
And then they both left the pantry just as the Senator’s voice boomed out over the P.A. System, “Fireworks start in 5 minutes!”
Starting up the stairs after the guards waved him on, Smooth Paul smiled and thought, “Senator, you have no idea.”
