A California Kid & Spider Story: The Hot Job
Sister Nell & The California Kid
The band had been hired to play only until the fireworks started, so they were now packing up to leave. Nell helped them load up their 2 vans, then stepped in between them to change. A few minutes later, she stepped out wearing jeans, a dark blue blouse, low top sneakers, and with a red wig covering her blonde hair. Her accent was now full West Texas, as was her attitude. She looked and sounded very much like Senator Jervison’s niece, Mandy.
Thanking the band once again, she walked to the house as they drove away.
The California Kid left the kitchen by the route he’s entered it, then turned toward the south side, where 4 luxury restroom trailers had been set up. Instead of going into one, he walked halfway down the side of the house until he saw a gap between the poplar trees that grew along that side. He stepped into the gap, which was about 4 feet wide and 3 feet deep.
Getting on the radio, he simply said “In position.” Queen Bee replied, “2 minutes.”
2 minutes later, just as Nell stepped into the gap with him, a rope ladder unrolled down to them. He tugged on it to make sure it was secure, then nodded to Nell to start up. Once she reached the second floor window, the Kid started up.
Once they were both in the window and on the second floor, he asked Nell if she’d had any problems.
“Nope. You’d be surprised how easily guards let you run in one door and out another when you’re looking like you’ll puke any moment.”
The Kid laughed at that as they both pullled on rubber gloves.
“Well then, I guess we’re all set. It’s the third door down that left hallway.”
When they got to the door to the very large walk in storage room for winter clothing, extra blankets, winter boots, and boxes of assorted stuff, they found it unlocked, just as Lucy had promised.
“Okay, time to start our search. My guess is the stuff is not in any of these boxes.”
With that, he and Nell began searching the room.
