A California Kid & Spider Story: The Hot Job

Queen Bee and Chief Richards

As the catering truck she was in was heading for the front gate, Queen Bee gave one last message to the team.

“This is your Honey Mama signing off, babies. I’ll see you all in the hive.” Then she switched frequencies and said “Heads up, boys. Time to clean up.”

15 minutes later the truck pulled into a parking lot not far from the freeway and 4 big men start unloading all of her equipment. Just a few minutes later, it was loaded into the back of a cargo van that already had her 3 video cameras. As her two nephews drove off in the van, she and her two brothers got into a big black Cadillac with tinted windows, the better to keep police or security from seeing black faces here in the wealthy white suburbs. Her brother doing the driving had put of a chauffer’s cap, which pretty much guaranteed no cops stopping them.

Once they were moving, she kicked off her shoes and relaxed, wondering what her daughter and son in law would name the baby.

A couple of hours later, Chief Richards watched his rent-a-cops leave, then climbed into his trusty Ford and started for home. He’d called Missy, his 20 year old girlfriend, and told her he’d bring home a pizza and beer. She said okay, but sounded a little distracted. He figured she was probably watching Johnny Carson or something. She watched a lot of tv.

He tried calling his nephew’s place from a gas station, but there was no answer. Damned kid was probably either still watching the thieves or he was over at a friend’s place playing that Atari thing. He’d try again in the morning.

90 minutes later, as he pulled into his apartment complex, he saw a couple of DCPD cars and what he figured were FBI vehicles. Something was going down. He’d have to come out and talk to the cops a bit later, to see what was up. Probably that French guy down in 322. The Chief had pegged him as a troublemaker.

But for now, he needed to get this pizza upstairs before it got cold.
