A California Kid & Spider Story: The Hot Job
Smooth Paul
As the last booms of the fireworks display were echoing off of the hills, Smooth and Lucy left the mansion and sought out her parents.
“So, Tom, what did you think of the show?” The Senator was perhaps just a wee bit tipsy and was, as powerful men often are, seeking confirmation that he had done something special.
“I thought it was one of the best I’ve ever seen, sir.” Smooth had switched on his “slightly kissing ass” voice. “Much better that Senator Karlson’s a couple of years ago.”
It pleased the Senator to hear this. “Damned straight it was. Now, what plans do you two have for the rest of the night?”
“We’ve been invited to a party at the Barrington’s, Daddy,” Lucy said. “We may get in a bit late.”
Her stepmother spoke up. “Well, your dad will no doubt be up late, too, talking with Senator Miller and General Davis. Drive carefully, because the drunks are out tonight.”
“Will do, ma’am.” Smooth gave her a big smile before he and Lucy walked away. As they got into Smooth’s car, Lucy said, “I kind of feel bad about what’s going to happen when she finds that envelope. Steph isn’t really a bad person.”
“No,” Smooth agreed as they started down the driveway. “But she’s tougher than she looks and she’s probably expected what’s coming. Besides, she’ll have your dad by the balls and they had no pre-nup. She’ll be just fine.”
Lucy agreed that was probably the case. Besides, she thought to herself, I’m not going to be around to see any of those fireworks.
And then they drove out onto the road and away from any party the Barrington’s might be having.
