A California Kid & Spider Story: The Hot Job
The California Kid and Sister Nell
After stumbling drunkenly into the restrooms, Nell did indeed take a couple of minutes to pee, while The Kid, ignoring the smell of sick cop barf, used his own small canister of helium to fill 4 small balloons and tie them all together with one string. With that done, he stumbled out of the restrooms just as Nell did.
“Look here, honey! I found ya some bathroom balloons!” He held them out to here as he weaved drunkenly.
Nell ran toward him, stumbling into his arms. They kissed like a couple of sloppy drunks.
The guards could barely hear her over the fireworks finale when she said, “Oh, baby, yer so sweet! I love you!” Then, arm in arm, they stumbled toward the west side of the house and around the corner.
The moment they turned the corner, the two still sick cops came out of the restrooms. They looked pretty rough and all of the nearby guards and cops were looking at them. Chief Richards came from his station to talk to them. He walked right past Nell and The Kid, who were now the image of young parents talking about getting home to pay the babysitter and feed the cat.
The Kid spotted the weight right where it should be. The thin black line was nearly invisible as he stopped to pick up the weight, glancing upward to barely see the black balloon 200 feet above them. He then handed the weight to Nell, who put it in her purse and held her balloons in the same hand that held the line.
When they got into The Kid’s convertible, she hooked the line to a device sitting on the center console as The Kid drove them out of the estate slowly, then turned up the hill toward the Dendrige Estate. About half a mile up, he stopped as Nell activated the motor that would pull the balloon down to them. A few minutes later, it was down close enough for The Kid to retrieve the artwork and cut the balloon loose. As it floated away, he started driving again.
“I love it when a job goes off well,” he said. “Especially one as rewarding as this one.”
Nell agreed, then asked, “So where did you leave the red feather this time?”
A red feather had been the calling card for he and Spider since they had started their current cycle of thievry.
“Taped right to the safe door. I’m pretty sure the Senator will call the FBI as soon as he finds out he was robbed. But now for more important matters. Chinese or Italian? I know great places for both that are open late.”
Nell leaned her seat back and let the wind blow her hair.
“Surprise me, Big Guy.”
