A California Kid & Spider Story: The Hot Job

Spider and Moon

With all of the paintings unframed, rolled up and placed into 4 aluminum tubes that were then capped off, Spider and Moon next gathered all of their equipment and left the room for the roof. Spider then began putting the window back in place while Spider used the canisters of helium to inflate the balloon that had been folded up. Once that was done, he attached the thin cord to the balloon.

Moon came over and hooked the tubes full of artwork to the balloon while Spider let the cord out to a few feet from the end. He then tied the end to a 10 pound weight he removed from his backpack. When everything was set up and the huge booms from the fireworks finale were going off, he dropped the weight down to a few feet from the northeast corner of the house.

With their jobs done, Moon revealed to Spider that he had taken a bottle of the Senator’s expensive bourbon before they left the room. “A little something for the party.”

Spider nodded and shook his hand. “I’ll see you there, ese.”

Then they climbed down to the second floor window that was still open and quickly stripped off their outerwear, revealing Moon still in his waiter garb and Spider dressed in a shirt and jeans. Then Moon was back down the elevator with all their gear while Spider walked down the stairs and out a side door.

A few minutes later, no guards paid any attention to the Mexican waiter carrying a bag of trash out to the catering truck that left soon after. Nor did they pay attention to the young white guy who walked past them heading toward the parking area.

Five minutes later, Spider pulled his Harley over to the side of the road and found Chief Richards nephew. He cut him loose, pressed 5 c-notes into his hand and said, “Get on that bike of yours and get out of the state until your uncle either cools down or goes to jail.”

By the time Spider was on his bike, the young man was hauling ass down the road.
