A California Kid & Spider Story: The Hot Job

The California Kid and Sister Nell

Having found the combination to the safe, The Kid and Nell went straight up to the Senator’s third floor office. The door was locked, which slowed them down only for the 43 seconds it took The Kid to pick the lock. Once they were inside, Nell stood guard at the door while he went over to the picture of Davy Crockett on the wall, swung it out and proceeded to open the safe. Wanting it to looklike a robbery, The Kid cleaned out the safe, then left the door open. Most of the contents were legal papers, but he guessed there was maybe $75,000 in cash, too.

More importantly, there was another combination written in very fine print on the inside of the safe door. The Kid memorized it and then walked over to the small bathroom just off the main office. It looked like a nice, if small half bath, but on closer inspection of one wall, The Kid noticed a slightly worn area slightly below eye level on a tall man. That section of the wall was covered by small tiles the size of a postage stamp.

Noting the 4X4 grid of worn squares, The Kid typed in the combination of 16-1-2-12. This caused the whole wall to swing into a secret hallway. About 8 feet down, there were narrow stairs going up. At the top of them was a door.

The Kid stepped back into the office and told Nell, “Change.”

Then he grabbed the pillowcase and went back to the stairs. He ran up them, stopped at the top, and knocked on the door.

Spider opened it and said, “Oh, it’s only you. I was afraid it was Jehovah’s Witnesses.”

“Very funny. How goes it?”

Spider pointed to a stack of unframed paintings on the end table.

“26 items and we’ve unframed 10. Get to work.”

“With The Kid pitching in, the had the remaining paintings off their frames just as Queen Bee announced “15 minutes.”

“I’ll see you at base”, The Kid told them before he closed the door and started down the stairs. When he got back into the office, Nell was wearing different clothing and looked like a chubby wife of some wealthy political donor.

“Excellent,” said The Kid.

“It was a great idea to have Lucy hide these clothes in here while her dad was on the can earlier today.”

“Well, we couldn’t have you coming upstairs with a suitcase. Now let’s get out of here.”

With that, they left the office door slightly ajar and headed down to the second floor and that open window. By the time they got there, The Kid had reversed his jacket, removed the dark brown wig he had been wearing to cover his blonde hair, and was wearing a pair of glasses.

Just before they started down the rope ladder, The Kid spoke into his radio and said, “School is almost out.”

One minute later he was on the ground and the rope ladder was pulled back up through the window.

And then he and Nell drunkenly stumbled toward the restrooms.
