A California Kid & Spider Story: The Hot Job
Smooth Paul
At about the 15 minute mark of the fireworks show, Smooth left Lucy at the balcony railing and went back into the bathroom where his package was. Opening it up, he took out a large folded up piece of very thin rubber, two small gas canisters, a large black pillowcase and a roll of very thin cord. He quickly put the plastic, the canisters, and the cord into the pillowcase, then left the room.
He was just entering the same hallway that the Kid and Nell had went down when he heard Queen Bee announce the 30 minute mark. When he got to the storage room, he knocked 3 times, then went in.
“How goes it?” he asked.
The Kid took the pillowcase and held up a beat to shit old cowboy boot.
“He wrote the combination on the sole. Pretty clever, really. Who would even think twice about these old things?”
Lucy had told Smooth that her dad couldn’t remember things with lots of numbers, and would go into this room every time before he opened his wall safe in his study. After that, The Kid just had to search around for the unlikeliest place to write down a few numbers.
Smooth nodded, then told the other two thieves he’d see them later. He quickly made his way back to the balcony, where he took Lucy into his arms.
“They have it. Daddy’s safe will be empty in about 10 minutes.”
Lucy gave him a big kiss. “That’s great. What about the other thing?”
“Leave that on your stepmother’s pillow just before we head back downstairs.”
They kissed again, then went back to watching fireworks.
