A California Kid & Spider Story: The Hot Job

Spider & Moon

As soon as the Kid had said “showtime”, Spider was on the move. He dropped the line that would cause both cameras to lower when pulled. After that he was down the tree and putting on his backpack. Everything else would be picked up by Queen Bee after the job.

Sprinting to the fence, he grabbed the rope that he put there this morning and was over in seconds. The back yard, being cop free, allowed him to just jog over to the rear wall of the house and climb up the rope ladder that Moon had just dropped down.

Once he was on the narrow flat perimeter of the roof, he and Moon walked over to a purely decorative window on the peaked portion of this supposedly attic free house. They then began to quietly remove the window and the thin plywood backing behind it.

To be honest, most of the mansion really did not have a true attic, just a roughly 5 foot high crawlspace that could be used for roof repairs or heating duct work. But this part of this wing had more space than that, and the two thieves were about to enter it.

When they had the window completely free, they set it on the roof and crawled into the darkened room beyond. The space they crawled onto was only 3 feet wide and 6 inches deep, so Spider went first and dropped about 6 feet to the floor. While Moon taped a thick black plastic to the empty window space, Spider used a very dim flashlight to find the light switch next to the door.

“35 minutes until curtains,” said Queen Bee over the radio.

Moon whistled quietly and Spider turned on the lights.

The room measured about 14 feet long and 10 feet wide, with a 9 foot ceiling. The only furnishings were a large armchair, a footstool, and a combination end table and mini-bar. The floor was mahogany. None of those things looked cheap

And the walls were covered with paintings of all sizes. They didn’t look cheap either.

Spider and Moon both smiled. It was a whole lot of undeclared art.
