Unusual Small Towns: Underlake
Underlake is a tourist town of 300 permanent residents and, during the high season, up to 1,500 tourists. The town sits under a 6 inch thick glass dome with two equally thick glass tunnels running east to west. An electric train runs back and forth to the surface villages of Lakeside East and Lakeside West.
The town, dome and all, was constructed in a small valley, then a dam was constructed to flood the valley, leaving the town 80 feet underwater. The lake was stocked with many species of fish and other aquatic life. Later, otters and muskrats were added. Waterfowl naturally arrived later.
Underlake is a very popular spot for visitors looking to do something different for a few days.
