Unusual Small Towns: Airville
On Earth 118-K, there is a well known piece of land where an extraterrestrial ship crashed in 1860. Before it completely disintegrated, it released a great amount of energy, enough to reduce the effects of gravity by 80%.
In 1880, a conglomerate of wealthy people bought the land and announced a plan to build a floating town on the spot, to be held aloft by several huge airships. Construction began almost immediately and was finished in spring of 1883.
Airville floats 300 feet about the ground, suspended from 8 enormous airships filled with hydrogen. The platform the town is built upon measures 600 feet on a side with an 20 foot tall fence around the perimeter. A light netting covers the entire town so as to prevent people from accidentally jumping off the town. There are 36 buildings in the town and a circular central park that measures 60 feet across. The permanent population is only 300 people, all of whom are shorter and more slender than average. They trained for a month to adjust to living there.
Tourists, who are almost all wealthy, arrive in town via a smaller fleet of airships. They relax, eat fine food, drink and enjoy the feeling of looking down upon the world of lesser humans.
