Mistakes Were Made: The Escaped Geese Fiasco
Lucy started the day off well. She ate breakfast with her family, then went out to feed the animals while her dad and brothers went off to cut some firewood. Her mom and little sister had to go into town, so Lucy could tend the critters in peace.
So it was that she fed the chickens, the ducks, the pigs and the goats, enjoying the company of all of them. But then she came to her least favorite livestock, the geese. Unlike the other poultry on the farm, the geese were big, foul tempered, and aggressive. Fortunately, she just had to make sure they had food and water before she opened the gate between their night shelter and the larger day pen.
The geese were eating their food and Lucy was just opening that gate, when she tripped over a small rock and fell over backward. Normally, that would not have upset the geese, but on this occasion, Lucy let go of the small plastic bucket she had carried the goose chow in and it flew right into the middle of the flock. The geese did not like that one bit.
As 20 upset killer geese came running toward her, Lucy jumped up and ran for the main gait out of the goose pens. She got out of the gate, but the geese were right behind her and she could not take the time to shut and secure it. The geese were now loose.
On the bright side, they were pretty intent on attacking the hell out of Lucy, so where she ran screaming, they followed honking and hissing. Through the barn, around the goat yard, through the garden, she led them on a merry chase. Finally, after getting bitten a few times, Lucy managed to scurry up the small apple tree in the front yard. The geese gathered under the tree, the better to get her if she came down.
Three hours later, when her dad and brothers came home, they managed to herd all of the geese back into their pen. Lucy would hear about her goose adventure for decades to come.
