A Huge Ugly Face On a Rock

The Doclopedia #3,400

Little Monsters: Smolves

Name: Smolves

Size: Small, 18-26 inches

Environment: Temperate to sub-tropical areas

Notes: The resemble tiny wolves, but are much smarter…and cursed

Looking exactly like a housecat sized black wolf, smolves are not pack hunters, nor are they strictly carnivores. They are also rather shy and tend to avoid most creatures larger than themselves. They are also very smart, as in humanoid level smart. They are excellent problem solvers.

And the main problem they try to solve is getting rid of the three curses that get laid upon them at sexual maturity by the Nature Goddess, Vilvain.

Why were these relatively inoffensive creatures cursed? Nobody knows for sure, and the clerics who follow Vilvain say she is not telling.

Each smolf is given three different curses. They are not major curses, more like annoyance curses. A foul smell several times a day, random teleportation while asleep, an inability to eat certain foods, that sort of thing. So the smolves must pass these curses on to the only creatures they can: humanoids. Specifically, humans, elves, and dwarves. Halflings seem to get a break.

To pass the curse, the smolf has to sleep for at least two hours while in bodily contact with the humanoid. Once this is done, the curse is passed. Then the smolf has to wait a week before it can do it again. Since humanoids and their animal companions know about smolves, they stay on the alert for them. Still, most smolves become curse free within about 5 years.

Recently, it has been proven that once a smolf is curse free, they turn into a full sized black wolf. In addition, these former smolves will never harm a humanoid, and indeed, will come to their aid if they are in trouble.
