A World Without…: Magic

“Yes, I remember the very day we lost the magic. It was midday and I was 9 years old at the King’s Zoo with my class from school. Suddenly, several of the animals just fell over, dead. Then the spells used by zoo workers to clean up and move things around stopped working. Later we found out that several wizards rapidly aged and died. Nothing that needed magic to live survived.

It was a terrible time for the next few weeks. We found out that magic was gone from most of the world, although it can still be found in the most remote and wild places. Businesses had to reorganize, armies had to beef up their non-magical units, and anyone who made money from magic had to find a new line of work. This hit adventurers particularly hard, since most dungeons just fell apart.

So now, 60 years later, I’m an old man and our world is very different. Is that bad or good? I don’t know, but I do still miss that zoo.”
