A World Without…: Children

“Wait…you mean your people still go through the long slog of childhood and, ugh, puberty? How primitive. We dispensed with that over 140 years ago. The invention of the maturity tanks was such a blessing. Yes, of course we still give birth to babies, mostly because the out of body gestation process is still too problematic, but all babies go in the tanks at 18 months. Then, 5 years later, they come out as fully formed and educated 20 year olds. The social interaction programs insure that they will fit right in, both in social situations and at work.

Well, yes, we do have a shorter lifespan than you say you do. On the other hand, I can’t really imagine wanting to live to 70 or 80. I mean, things start to break down and you get all wrinkled and gray. No, I’m good living to 60 or so.”
