Alt. Cross Family Dogs: Lucy

Full Name: Lucy Louise Cross

Breed: Rottweiler

We got Lucy from a neighbor whose dog had died giving birth to 3 puppies. Lucy was barely 3 days old when we got her and she was the runt of the litter. My wife, our 17 year old, and I, took turns bottle feeding her. She slept with us, too. By the time she was 8 weeks old, we had lost Daisy Ann and Winker.

Lucy was our most loving dog, having imprinted on us. She pretty much became a Daddy’s Girl and was my constant companion for all her life. She outgrew the runt phase fast, gaining a big adult size and weighing 130 pounds. She looked scary, but was in fact a big marshmallow.

After we became empty nesters, we began to travel more frequently. Lucy was an excellent travel companion. She loved going places and meeting new people and animals. For about 10 months, we drove all over North and Central America, and Lucy made new friends everywhere, including in Denver, Colorado where we toured a new state of the art animal shelter and Lucy refused to leave until we adopted Sasha and Daisy Mae. So we did.

Those three girls, all of whom had different personalities, got along great and traveled far and wide for several years.

Lucy began to have some big dog health issues around the time she turned 10. They were manageable until a couple of months after her 13th birthday, at which point our vet helped her leave us. She was greatly missed. She is buried under our backyard pond.
