Alt. Cross Family Dogs: Sasha

Full Name: Sasha Jane Cross

Breed: Border Collie Mix

When we went into the shelter in Denver, on May 10, 2001, we had no intention of adopting two more dogs, but we ended up doing just that. Sasha was a 1 year old Border Collie mix, most likely some larger terrier. Even that young, she was very smart, very bossy, and very affectionate. She was also a picky eater. None of that canned food for her. Dry food with cooked veggies mixed in was just fine, as was any people food she could get.

Sasha became the boss sister after about 2 days. Or at least, she tried to be. Lucy was okay with it, but Daisy Mae had a different take on things. While they never actually fought, their constant antics to claim various prizes, like beds and toys, were often hilarious.

Sasha was the smartest dog we ever had, learning many tricks and behaviors, some of which she taught herself. On one trip to the UK, we entered her in a puzzle solving competition at the Crufts dog show. She won, beating the second place dog by 90 seconds.

When Lucy died, Sasha went and slept in her bed for two weeks. After that, we got rid of Lucy’s stuff, except for the Pink Teddy Bear. Sasha claimed that and slept with it most nights for the rest of her life.

Just before her 16th birthday, Sasha, by now nearly blind and slowed down by arthritis, was diagnosed with cancer. She got relieved of any pain three months after her birthday. We wrote about it in our weekly column online, and got 25,000 sympathy comments, from people all over the world. She is buried under the Big Flower Bed.
