Alt. Cross Family Dogs: Daisy Mae

Full Name: Daisy Mae Cross

Breed: Shiba Inu/Jack Russell Terrier

Daisy Mae was an 8 month old bundle of energy when we adopted her, and quickly claimed Lucy as her Mom and Sasha as her best friend/sister/rival. While not as intelligent as Sasha, she was no dummy and that coupled with her stubbornness is why we had to start locking up dog treats.

In those first few months with us, she also took puppy destructive habits to new levels. She chewed up a cell phone, two tv remotes, about 8 shoes, two dog beds, a garden hose, and Lucy’s leather collar WHILE LUCY WAS WEARING IT! Fortunately, she grew out of that phase by the time she was 14 months old.

Of course, she never grew out of wanting to upstage Sasha. She would steal her toys, sleep in her bed, and generally bug her all day. In return, Sasha did the same to her. You’d think they’d hate each other, but they often slept together and they both worried the whole time the other was gone for awhile.

Being mostly terrier, Daisy Mae had a psychotic hatred of mice, rats, squirrels and other rodents. She wasn’t big on most cats, but did form a close friendship with our granddaughter’s cat, Max.

Daisy Mae outlived Sasha by almost exactly 2 years. She died peacefully in her sleep at our home in San Francisco. She was almost 18 years old and remains our longest lived dog. We laid her to rest next to Sasha and Max the cat under the Big Flower Bed.
