Alt. Hit Records: What The Hell?
Year: 1946
Group/Artist: Nick Manelli
Ranking on the Top 40: 1
This was a mildly controversial song when it appeared in the 1945 Broadway play “Back In The Swing Of Things”, but when popular big band singer gone solo, Nick Manelli, recorded it the next year, it became a huge hit, spending 4 weeks at #1 and staying in the Top Ten for 12 more weeks.
A breezy little ditty about just doing questionable things, it was totally danceable and Manelli sold it with his happy vocal. The sprightly music was supplied by band members of Manellis old big band boss, Jimmy Scott. Particularly of note were Fox olson on tenor sax and the great Ken Chow on drums.
When the play was revived in 1975 with a sex swapped cast, this song was recorded as a duet by stars Terry Allwine and Jade Carr.
