Alt. Hit Records: My Man Is Gone
Year: 1985
Group/Artist: Mercedes Vinson
Ranking on the Top 40: 2
Originally recorded in 1925 by 18 year old Ella Mae Tanders, this hit version was recorded in 1985 by her granddaughter, Mercedes Vinson. Producer Lick Coleman wisely kept the slow, sultry vocal, but replaced the serviceable piano accompaniment with a much better version, and added Paul Mendez’ haunting sax.
Mercedes vocals are pure torch song gold, and the public loved it. It stayed at #2 for three weeks, dropped to #3 for a week, then stayed at #6 for another month. It went platinum in just under a month.
Two months after release, Mercedes sang the song along with her grandmother of “Late Night With Jane”, and got a standing ovation from the studio audience.
