My Town, By Cora Hayes

335 Glass Street: Yussef’s Boarding House

My neighbors to the north are Ibrahim Yussef and his wife, Idrani. They came here back in ’09 from Ethiopia and had just enough money to buy the old and rundown Bailey home. They worked odd jobs until they could fix the place up and turn it into a boarding house for local immigrant workers.

At any given time, the Yussef’s have 6 to 10 boarders. They also have their two teenage children, Alyse and Thomas. They are good kids and Alyse will be off to university next fall. The family also has a cat named Joseph that has to be 15 years old by now.

Besides sometimes going to dinner at their home, which is always a delicious delight, I sometimes stop by to talk to the boarders. Coming from all over the world as they do, they are a wealth of information about their homelands and the interesting legends associated with them. I pay them for their time, so they are always glad to see me.

Next time, we’ll look across the street at the oldest grocer in town.
