…with big teeth!
Critter Con 14
The Trip Home Day 2: In which we stop at a brand new sanctuary, pick veggies, hit the lounge for some Vegas prep, and arrive in Sin City.
We left Durango at 7:00 this morning, headed for Las Vegas, Nevada. Since we only had one stop planned, we did not bother dressing or doing much for a few hours, Breakfast was pretty much whatever one felt like.
Our stop, which came at a time and location I cannot divulge, was the newest Sanctuary created by the NHTA, Desert Streams. Like all Sanctuaries, it has entrances that are pretty much impossible to find unless you are part of an NHTA Science Team, or Sasha Jane Cross, NHTA Senior Science Advisor.
We entered Desert Streams by doing a Platform 9 ¾ run at a solid stone wall. As much as I trust Sweetie, it was still a sphincter slamming thing to see.
The Sanctuary is large, at 250,000 acres, and is 2,500 years in the past. It will be there for the next 300 years, by which time we humans will be gone and the NHT that replace us will have reset the planetary thermostat and rebuilt all the ecosystems with help from GalFed. After all the proper residents are back in the future, the evidence that the Sanctuary was ever here will be scrubbed to the molecular level.
As things are now, the habitat is a touch cooler and has several streams that run through it, hence the name. The folks here now are mostly non-sapient, but there are a few scientists here to keep an eye on things. We surveyed things from about 200 feet up, disguised as a cloud. The whole place is much greener, as deserts go, than the same spot in 2021. Lots of wildlife around, too.
I would be remiss if I did not mention that the next Sanctuary to be established, in Canada & the US, was partially based upon a student suggestion by Miss Cupcake Waterfall Cross.
We spent a couple of hours there, then had sandwiches and chips as Sweetie flew us ahead a bit to make up for lost time. Then, after a short nap, we decided to go to Prima’s! For a bit of pre-Vegas music and libation.
Now, I have to be up front here and say that not all of our lounge acts are lounge acts. We get headliners, too, and tonight, well, today, we had Liberace.
Was he over the top? Of course. Was he funny? Very. Did he play the shit out of the piano in almost any style you can think of? Yes! The crowd was pretty big and having a good time. This was Liberace from the mid-1950s, so not the huge productions he later became famous for, but still a hell of a show. He played and joked for a full 90 minutes.
The next act up was a filler act called Larry & June. They told jokes and did magic tricks, often featuring their little mixed breed dog, Boss. It was a good little act.
The next big act was Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. I’ve always been a fan of Western Swing and Bob Will was the King of Western Swing. It was a great show, and it kind of connected me with my late parents, who saw them perform in the 1940’s.
After spending about 4 hours in the lounge, we were all hyped up for Las Vegas and dinner and whatever. Which is why were are right now (2:20 am) getting ready for bed at the Sands…in 1960.
Yeah, I know I said no timey wimey, but there’s Vegas and then there’s Vegas.
More bloggage tomorrow.
