The Only Way Out: Of This Apartment
“Yeah, we’re gonna have to go across the rooftops. I know we’re 10 floors up, but the cops just walked into the ground floor and I figure we’ve got less than 15 minutes before they find out we’re here. How? They’ll knock on Albert’s door, or Mrs. Kowalski’s or somebody who knows about us.
Look, it’s a 20 foot leap and a 15 foot drop to the roof of the apartments next door. I’m pretty sure only Lamar and I can do it without breaking a leg or something, so I’ll go first. We’ll use every sheet and tablecloth in the house to make a rope the rest of you can slide down. Then Lamar will jump, unless we have enough to tie off one end.
After we’re on that roof, the next roof is only about 8 feet and maybe 3 feet lower. From there, we go down a fire escape and haul ass into the park, then split up. We’ll meet at the Red Ace, then figure out what to do next.
You got the sheets and stuff, Gail? Great! Yeah, that looks like plenty. Now everyone get to tying and I’ll go open the door to the roof.”
