Safiq struck first, cutting a gash along the tiger’s left shoulder. He then tried to stab the beast, but the tiger got his sword arm in its mouth. As Safiq screamed, Bevan leaped onto the tiger’s back and began slashing, hoping to sever its spine. Blood flew, but he knew he was only cutting the loose skin of the cat. Releasing Safiq, the tiger spun around, throwing Bevan off and dealing the young man a searingly painful claw wound to the hip. It had tried to bite him, but had only gotten a mouthful of his backpack instead. With a powerful shake of its head, it tore the pack loose and sent Bevan rolling down the steep hillside, bouncing off rocks as he went.
