When he finally saw the Road from the top of a small rise, Bevan had gotten even more lightheaded. Blood loss and probably shock, he decided. He was now a good three miles from the attack site and each step was a slow and agonizing affair. He would take a few steps, then stop to breath deeply and give his hip a moment to relax, then continue on. More than once he had thanked his ancestors for this sunny spring day. If it had been raining, he might have just given up and died miles back.
