No sooner had Dree put away the mugs than his father shoved a tray of food into his hand and told him to take it out to those two. Apparently, Dad had already taken them a couple of large mugs of ale out to them. The food tray had about a pound of pork roast, several kinds of vegetables, half a loaf of bread and cups of butter and jelly on it. When he sat it down on the table, the man looked at it like he hadn’t eaten in days. Before Dree could ask him if he’d like anything else, the man asked him a question.

“Do you know a Mr. Ufflunder, young sir?,” he asked before taking a big bite out of a roasted potato.

Dree nodded. “Oh yes, he’s the chicken farmer for the whole town. He’s got about 7,000 chickens.”

The Offy swallowed a mouthful of food and asked, “Is he an honest fellow? I’ll be working for him starting in about an hour.”

Dree smiled at that. There were only two things Mr. Ufflunder hired help for and it wasn’t time to butcher yet. “Yes, he’s a fair and honest man. My oldest sister’s husband used to work for him. And sir, I’d change out of those new clothes if I were you. He’s going to have you shoveling chicken shit.”
