Stairway To…: War
From the notebook of Zimwalt the Astounding…
After returning from the three year long search for the remains of the Archwizard Loroftus, which, by the way, we never found, I returned home. After taking a few months to rest and regrow various body parts, I felt ready to resume my search for the mythical Stairway to Heaven.
Once again I used several connected incantations, as well as two expensive and terrible tasting potions, to open a doorway leading to a stairway. Surely I would ascend to heaven this time.
Alas, the stairway before me was a dinghy and blood spattered affair made mostly of shards of metal, dirt, and human bones. Past experience had taught me that a summoned stairway unclimbed would appear before me every day until I did climb it.
And so, up I went.
Seventeen steps later, I found myself on a battlefield. It took a minute for me to realize that this was the Battle of Sorzon Valley, during which the Armies of Talikos, Berdania, and Hal Avtos fought the invading Beast Women of Rel and their Proto-Demon allies. I was not in the thick of things, so a hasty retreat was in order.
From behind a large boulder, I witnessed slaughter on a grand scale. Both sides were taking huge losses, although I knew from my history lessons that the Allied Armies would win two days later.
This went on for two hours before the stairway appeared again and I could leave. Once home, I went directly to bed, where my fitful sleep was filled with dreams of war.
