A California Kid & Spider Story: The Hot Job

This is the story of an art heist that takes place during a Fourth of July party, and what each person in the team was doing.

Smooth Paul

On the day of the hot job, Smooth Paul arrived just after 3:00 pm with Senator Jervison’s eldest daughter, Lucy. He and Lucy had been dating for about 6 weeks and he had been to the mansion 11 times already. Each visit, he had ingratiated himself a bit more with everyone, from the staff to the Senator himself. He was well liked, which of course was his special talent.

The Senator liked him for his straightforward conservative views and the fact that he seemed to have had a very calming effect on Lucy, who at 19 had been getting rebellious and becoming a distraction. But since she had started dating the clean cut Tom, Paul’s name this time out, she hadn’t been a bit of trouble. Truth be told, the Senator would not mind if they got serious enough to get married in a few years.

Of course, the whole relationship was a ruse. Lucy was still a firebrand liberal at heart and still hated her father for the way he had forced her mother to divorce him and leave the country so he could marry his much younger present wife. Paul had met her at a party after watching her and getting information about her and the family from her friends.

When he finally told her that his friends wanted to rob her father of his secret art collection, she had gotten positively giddy. Since then, she had helped get valuable information about the house, everyone’s schedule, and the plans for the party. Paul had put the information packets together and sent them to the crew, who were staying in a rented farmhouse 30 miles away in rural Maryland. After that, his job was to just give updates, grease the right palms, and act as a lookout once the clock started ticking.

Well, all the updates had been given and all the right palms had been greased. Now, it was time to relax, possibly scout out useful marks for future use, and have a cool beverage.

So at 3:30 pm, Smooth Paul was sitting next to Lucy by the pool, drinking a soda and making small talk with her older brothers and their dates, none of whom would ever be rocket scientists. Guests were arriving, music was soon to be playing, and food was grilling.

It was 4.5 hours until showtime.
