What Happened To Polly: She’s Now An Ex-Parrot
“My parrot? Dear old Polly? Yes, no longer with me, I’m afraid. Oh, no, not dead. No, she was with my friends and I when we rode into the Western Woods in search of Maleen, the Red Witch. Yes, we did find her, and dealt with her wickedness most finally.
However, during the trip, we chanced upon a magical fountain. Drinking from it improved us each in some way. Gannor became even stronger, Pelphine became heathier, I had my senses sharpened, and Brother Volis gained the ability to see auras of good or evil. But while we were assessing our own changes, Polly drank from the fountain and became much smarter, at least as smart as myself.
This was quite useful in our fight with Maleen, as Polly could go aloft and tell us the lay of the land. Once the witch was dead, we loaded up a large amount of loot and came home. Once back, I found that among the loot was a Ring of Wishing, which had one wish left.
As we discussed what we might wish for, Polly grabbed the ring, flew out to the courtyard, then slipped it on her toe. In a loud voice, she wished to be human and in a flash, she was! A most beautiful human, too. After getting dressed, she told us she was going off to see the world. I gave her a sack full of money and a horse. She rode off singing, a happy ex-parrot.”
